Happy Liturgical New Year to all! The New Church Year begins this weekend, and for the next twelve months our Scripture texts will be found in the Hymnals under the headings "Sunday B" and "Weekday 1". We begin the ninth year of use of the Catholic Community Hymnal (blessed and distributed Dec 2000). During the Advent Season, our Introductory Rite is noticeably more penitential: the Kyrie becomes more prominent as we set aside the Gloria except for feast days (Dec 8 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Dec 12 Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe).

The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper): Dominus dabit benignitatem; et terra nostra dabit fructum suum (The Lord will bestow his loving kindness; and our land will yield its fruit).

Marcel Dupre (1886-1971) spent much of his life at the Paris Conservatoire: as student (1902-14) under Guilmant, Vierne, Widor; as Professor of organ (1926-54); as Director (1954-56). He was also at St Sulpice: as assistant organist (1906-34) to C M Widor, then titulaire (1934-71). "Conditor alme siderum" is the first of his "Sixteen Chorales" (1942, opus 38). "Reveillez-vous, la voix des veillerus" is one of his "Seventy-nine Chorales" (1931, opus 28) which were composed during the Summer months and dedicated to banker Gustave Ogier, who was an aspiring organist. This tune is known in German as "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" and in English as "Sleepers wake".

This weekend we conclude the liturgical year and complete the eighth year of use of our hymnals (blessed and distributed Dec 2000 Advent-1). Our Weekend Hymn Use statistics for this year: 294 hymns available (#190 through #475 plus 8 on rear cover); used 151 (105 one time, 33 two times, 13 three-or-more times); hymns are selected for their correspondence to the Propers of the day, or to highlight scripture verses in the readings, or to reflect seasonal themes.

Sir Edward William Elgar (1857-1934), born in Broadheath England; had a few music lessons with his father [music shop keeper in Worcester, organist (1846-85) at St George Catholic Church] but was mostly self-taught (violinist, bassoonist, conductor); succeeded his father as organist (1885-88). Slowly his reputation spread; "Enigma Variations (1899)" launched his international fame; Knight (1904); Order of Merit (1911); succeeded Sir Walter Parratt as Master of the King's Musick (1924); Baronet (1931). Wrote songs, oratorios, cantatas, symphonies, overtures, concertos, marches, chamber music. "Cantique (op 3 no 1, 1912)" is his organ arrangement of his Intermezzo #1 (adagio) for Wind Quintet (1879). "Imperial March (Opus 32, 1897)" for orchestra was composed for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria (1819-r1837-1901) at whose death it was said had a worldwide empire on which the sun never set; it was arranged for organ by Sir George Clement Martin (1844-1916) who in 1888 succeeded Sir John Stainer (1840-1901) as organist of Saint Paul Cathedral.

Well done, good and faithful servant; because you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your Lord).

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) was born in Ansfelden Austria; he learned music from his schoolmaster-organist father and later he studied at the Augustinian monastery in Sankt Florian (upper Austria) and in 1851 became its organist. 1855-64 studied music (counterpoint, various composers); 1868- Vienna Conservatory music theory teacher; 1869 France organ concert tour; 1871 England organ concert tour; 1875- Vienna University teacher. Composed symphonies, masses, sacred choral works including motets, chamber works.

Thomas Adams (1850-1918) was born in England, and was one of many composers to contribute to the large volume of organ music composed for concert performances and church services in the 1800s. The prelude and postlude are part of an unbroken strand of English Romantic Era music even found in the present day. His music is easy on the ears, and his stylistic characteristics clearly reflect his Victorian age.

Henry Purcell (c1659-1695) was born in London England, the son of a court musician. In his youth he was a Chapel Royal chorister, and later holder of continuing royal appointments until his early death, while also working as organist (1679-) at Westminster Abbey. He wrote music for dramas, chamber instruments, and voice.

"I Will Love Thee, O Lord" is one of several anthems written for his friend, the bass John Gostling (1644-1733). It is the Responsorial Psalm for today set to the Book Of Common Prayer translation (Psalm 18: 1-6,16-18) and uses the word "prevented" (pre-venire) in its old sense ("came before"): (SOLO) I will love thee O Lord, my strength; / the Lord is my stony rock, and my defence: / my Saviour, my God, and my might, in whom I will trust, / my buckler, the horn also of my salvation and my refuge. / I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy, is worthy to be prais'd: / so shall I be safe from mine enemies. (CHOIR) They prevented me in the day of my trouble: but the Lord was my upholder. (SOLO) The sorrows of death compassed me, and the overflowings of the ungodly made me afraid. / The pains of hell came about me: and the snares of death over took me. / In my trouble I will call, will call upon the Lord: and complain unto my God. / So shall he hear my voice out of his holy temple: and my complaint shall come before / him, it shall enter ev'n into his ears. For he shall send down from on high / to fetch me, and shall take me out of many waters. / He shall deliver me from my strongest enemies, and from them which hate me: for / they are too mighty for me. / (CHOIR) They prevented me in the day of my trouble: but the Lord was my upholder.

Orlando di Lassus (c1532-1594) was a Franco-Flemish composer
of late Renaissance music. Along with Palestrina he is today
considered to be the chief representative of the mature polyphonic
style of the Franco-Flemish School, and he was the most famous
and influential musician in Europe by the end of his life.

Offertory Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper): Meditabor
in mandatis tuis, quae dilexi valde; et levabo manus meas ad
mandata tua, quae dilexi (I shall meditate upon your commandments
which I greatly love; I will extend my hands towards your commandments
which I love).

The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper):
Domine Dominus noster, quam admirabile est nomen tuum in
universa terra! (O Lord our governor, how admirable is your
name in all the earth!).

John Stanley (1713-1786), born in London England, wrote much music,
including three sets of Ten Voluntaries which, when published,
made him the most influential composer of the form, and the
format was often imitated by his contemporaries. His Voluntary
Set One Number One (1745) is in four sections and provides tempos
and registrations and indicates that some phrases are to be "eccho"
and therefore both gallery and antiphonal organ stops will be heard
in alternation.

John IV (1603-1656) was born at Vila Vicosa Portugal and succeeded (1630) his father Teodosio II as Duke of Braganza. As grandson of Duchess Catherine of Braganza who had in 1580 claimed the Portuguese crown and sparked the struggle for the throne, John was acclaimed King by the voice of the people in 1640; a long war against Spain (Philip IV) ensued through 1668, with fronts in Europe, Africa, Brazil. His son Afonso VI succeeded him; his daughter Catherine of Braganza married King Charles II of England. A patron of music and the arts, John collected a large library (destroyed 1755, Lisbon earthquake). Among his writings is a defense of Palestrina, and a Defense of Modern
Music (1649). His most famous composition is "Crux fidelis".

Pedro de Araujo (f1662-f1705) lived in Braga Portugal, and was the leading figure of a school of secular and monastic organists active in the Braga archdiocese: music teacher (1662-68) at Saint Peter Seminary, second (asst?) organist (-1665) at Braga cathedral, benefice recipient (1665-1704 and maybe later) at Saint Salvador in nearby Joane (now Famalicão). In his compositions, Portuguese organ music reached its zenith, achieving a level of quality and formal variety that made it the equal of Spain's. His "Batalha de 6 Tom" (Battle scene on the sixth tone) makes use of highly impressive timbres (mixtures, cornets, horizontal reeds).

From Richard Mix:

Last Sunday we anticipated the Feast of the Assumption with an
Ave Maria by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), written in 1934 for his
Orthodox parish in Paris.

The Ave Maria by Josquin Desprez (c1450-1521) sets a longer version
of this prayer, which was not to be standardized until the Council of
Trent. Josquin's reputation towered over not only other composers of the
Renaissance but over artists of other media: a contemporary resorted to
describing Michelangelo as "the Josquin of sculpture".

Hanacpachap cusicuinin is a Marian hymn in Quechua, the language of
the Inca. Published in Lima in 1631, the first two verses compare Our Lady
to a fruit tree and a pillar of ivory, respectively.

Postlude: Fugue in C (BWV 946): Bach

Music Notes:

Thank you to Richard Mix for playing the organ this weekend
to permit me to take a "weekend away".

The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper):
Simile est regnum caelorum homini negotiatiori, quaerenti bonas
margaritas; inventa una pretiosa margarita, dedit omnia sua, et
comparavit eam (The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant
seeking fine pearls; having found one of great worth, he went and
sold all that he had, and he bought it).

It was Dietrich Buxtehude's (1637-1707) playing at the
Marienkirche in the north-German city of Lübeck that was the
object of the young J S Bach's famous pilgimage in 1705-6.
Records from Arnstadt show that after completing the round
trip of 500 miles on foot he was severely reprimanded for
overstaying his leave, but this visit had a profound impact
on his writing. The fugue in C major is one of Bach's most
Handelian compositions; opinion is divided over whether it
was intended for organ or pedal harpsichord, a common practice
instrument in the days before power organ blowers.

The prolific opera composer Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725)
(father of the keyboard composer Domenico) was born in Sicily
but divided his career between the Neapolitan court, and Santa
Maria Maggiore in Rome where he wrote many oratorios as well as
a cappella motets in the old style.

here are some review fragments that are intrestesting to me ...

...

not a comprehensive, connected history of the
period but, rather, an ordered collection of eleven
essays, some of them on highly selective topics.
The only composers whose works are discussed at
any length are Boely, Franck, Guilmant and
Widor, and even here the approach is selective.
Apart from the works of Franck, the emphasis is
on organ works based on plainchant: Boely's
organ Masses, Guilmant's liturgical pieces and
Widor's Symphonie romane. The other exception is
a discussion of Boely's set of fourteen preludes
Op. 15 (1847) on noels by the sixteenth-century
poet Nicolas Denizot.

...

Benjamin Van Wye's
'Organ Music in the Mass of the Parisian Rite to 1850 with
Emphasis on the Contributions of Boely'
is a revision of an article that first appeared in L'Orgue
(Nos. 229 & 230 (1994)).
The author begins by explaining that
French churches had their own form of the
liturgy, and that this Neo-Gallican tradition persisted
until it was replaced by the uniform Roman
liturgy about 1850, the result of the ultramontane
movement. Van Wye begins by collating the Mass
Ordinary chants of the Parish Gradual (1738) with
their Roman equivalents. Later he lists and
discusses organ Mass publications from Michel Corrette (1756)
to Alexandre-Charles Fessy (1845).
Special attention is devoted to the Mass
composition of Alexandre-Pierre-Francois Boely
(1785-1858), dating from between 1834 and 1848.
Boely stands apart for his cultivation of the classic
French style and for his interest in the works of
J S Bach at a time when they were otherwise
neglected in France. The following essay,
'Boely's Quatorze Preludes usr des cantiques de Denizot, op.15,
and the Creation of a French "Christmas" Orgelbuchlein'
by Craig Cramer, examines the chief instance of
Boely's emulation of Bach.

...

The next two essays--
'"Why Should we not Do the Same with our Catholic Melodies?":
Guilmant's L'Organiste Liturgiste, Op. 65'
by Edward Zimmerman and Lawrence Archbold, and
'Widor's Symphonie romane'
by Lawrence Archbold--
are concerned with the use of plainsong in organ music,
and especially with the stylistic changes what followed
from the reforms of Solesmes. Each essay is concerned with
a relatively small portion of its composer's output, and,
since a good deal of the prose consists of descriptive
analysis of the music, readers will want to have scores handy.

The Easter Season concluded with Pentecost (May 11), and
the following two weekends of Ordinary Time were superseded
by two Solemnities (Trinity, Corpus Christi). This weekend
we enter fully into the long segment of the Season of Ordinary
Time, and set aside the Schubert/Proulx Deutsche Messe Ordinary
to use other familiar Mass Ordinary settings for the summertime.

Alexandre Gulmant (1837-1911) wrote (1888)(Opus 65 Book 4)
Offertoire and Sortie for the Feast of the Sacred Heart
(celebrated this year on May 30).

Charles Theodore Pachelbel (1690-1750) emigrated to the
USA in 1733; only a few of his works survive, among which
is the double choir Magnificat presented in honor of the
Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (May 31).
We presented (Mar 30) the same text in a composition by his
father Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706).

Provocation-Response

It is frowned upon to display emotions
temper, passion, indignation, umbrage.
It is perfectly acceptable to provoke these displays.
We focus on the response, not the provocation.
Why not focus on the provocation as well, if not more so?

William Boyce (1711-1779), born in London, the youngest of
four children of a cabinet-maker. St Paul Cathedral Chorister
under Charles King (1687-1748), then pupil of Maurice Greene
(1695-1755), and Johann Christoph Pepusch (1667-1752) who was
one of the more influential foreign composers and teachers
flourishing in England at the time. Despite hearing loss from
age 24 which worsened over his lifetime, had remarkable career:
Oxford Chapel organist (Vere Street 1734-36); Chapel Royal
composer (1736-); St Michael organist (Cornhill 1736-38);
Cambridge graduate (PhD Music 1749); All Hallows organist (Thames
Street 1749-69); Master of the King's Music (1755); Chapel Royal
organist (1758-79). The collection of English Cathedral Music
started by Greene (left unfinished at death) was willed to Boyce,
who completed and published it in several volumes (1760-78);
reprinted and added to until 1849, it is the first publication of
English church music in score form (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass
voice parts on a page) rather than in part form (each voice part
in a separate book). His own compositions include: services,
anthems, oratorios, symphonies, chamber music, opera, theater music.
His "Ten Voluntaries" were published posthumously (c1779-1793);

Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) born in Kansas City MO,
attended Harvard University, went to Paris and studied
with Nadia Boulanger, authored "The State of Music (1939)",
was New York Herald-Tribune music critic (1940-54), was
instrumental in the development of the "American Sound"
in classical music so often associated with the patriotic
compositions of Aaron Copland. His research into Southeastern
USA shape note tunes, folk hymns, white spirituals, led to
his arrangement of "My Shepherd will supply my need" (text
by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), hymn tune RESIGNATION from
"The Southern Harmony (1835)"). It was incorporated into his
film score for a Department of Agriculture documentary about
the Mississippi River Valley "The River (1937)" which is freely

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) wrote a set of eight short
preludes and fugues for organ between 1704 and 1717; the sixth
of the set is Prelude and Fugue in G minor (BWV 558). The Prelude
is gentle and features chords in different figurations played in
treble and bass: one plays blocked (simultaneous) notes while the
other plays arpeggiated (harp-like, in succession) notes, then they
switch. The Fugue is sturdy with its subject derived from the notes
of the tonic chord (G,Bb,D) with a few close notes (A,C,Eb) added for
interest.
