The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper):
Narrabo omnia mirabilia tua: laetabor, et exsultabo in te:
psallam nomini tuo, Altissime (I will relate all your wondrous
deeds, I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing to the
honour of your name, O Most High).


This weekend at the Saturday 5 pm Vigil Mass the Music is led
by the School Choir (directed by Rebecca Monson).


Mid-week is Ash Wednesday. The character of our liturgies
changes: the Gloria is not used (except for Solemnities); the
Alleluia is not used (from Tue Feb 24 after Compline [Night Prayer]
until well after sunset Sat Apr 11 [Easter Vigil]). Therefore,
sing heartily today, particularly the Gloria and Alleluia!


Church documents require minimal instrument use throughout Lent,
hence no Preludes or Interludes or Postludes will be presented.
Please maintain Silence before and after every Mass throughout Lent.


Colin Mawby (1936-) born in Portsmouth England, attended (1946-51)
Westminster Cathedral Choir School in London, from age 12 played organ
to assist its Master of Music (George Malcolm); attended Royal College
of Music (RCM), studied with Gordon Jacob, Adrian Boult, Malcolm Sargent.
He has held various posts: Westminster Cathedral (1961-78); Sacred Heart
Wimbledon; an inner-city London parish; a suburban parish; a provincial
cathedral parish. Moved to Ireland to be Choral Director at Radio
Telefis Eireann (RTE); founded (1991) National Chamber Choir of Ireland;
currently resides in a rural Irish parish. He has written 25 Masses,
5 song cycles, many settings for choir, pieces for children (2 operas,
Christmas cantata), organ pieces. His music is widely known, extensively
published and recorded.

Colin Hand (1929-) was born in North Lincolnshire England,
and studied at Scunthorpe Grammar School. After a proposed career
in biochemistry he turned to music, studied organ with Dr Melville
Cook and graduated Trinity College Dublin (BMus). He has composed
steadily throughout his career and spent fifteen years as a lecturer
in further education and another fifteen years (part-time) as an
examiner for Trinity College of Music, London. His works comprise
choral, orchestral and chamber music, with several pieces for teaching
purposes. He performs regularly both at home and abroad. In the late
1970s he spent time in research on Taverner and Renaissance music for a PhD.

The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper):
Multitudo languentium, et qui vexabantur a spiritibus immundis,
veniebant ad eum; quia virtus de illo exibat, et sanabat omnes
(A multitude with diseases, and those who were troubled by
unclean spirits, came unto him, because a power emanated from him
which healed them all).


This is the weekend after First Friday. Saturday 5 pm Vigil
Mass: Lectors are from the School and the Music is led by
the School Choir (directed by Rebecca Monson). Sunday 11 am Mass:
our chant setting is Missa VIII (de angelis).


Charles Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) had piano lessons with
Stamaty (1842) and Boely; entered Conservatoire (1848) and studied
with Halevy; his dazzling gifts early won him the admiration of Gounod,
Rossini, Berlioz, Liszt. Organist (1857-75) at the Madeleine; teacher
(1861-5) at the Ecole Niedermeyer. Organized concerts, revived interest
in older music (Bach, Handel, Rameau), wrote on topics (musical,
scientific, historical), traveled often and widely (Europe, North
Africa, South America), co-founded (1871) Societe Nationale de Musique.
Wrote sonatas, chamber music, symphonies, concertos, symphonic poems,
operas, choral works, organ pieces.


Richard H Lloyd (1933-), born near Manchester England,
attended: Lichfield Cathedral (1942-47 chorister), Rugby School
(music scholar), Jesus College Cambridge (organ scholar).
Held posts at: Salisbury Cathedral (assistant organist),
Hereford Cathedral (organist and master of choristers),
Durham Cathedral (1974-85 organist), Salisbury Cathedral
(school). Now divides his time between examining and composing.
The prelude and postlude bear French titles: Avant-propos
("preface") is a gentle introspective piece; Sortie ("exit,
departure") is confident and march-like with opportunities for
melodic fragments to be played on the gallery Fanfare Trumpet.
