Hoc signum fecit Iesus primum coram discipulis suis. (The Lord

of the feast." When the master of the feast tasted the water,

sign which Jesus accomplished before his disciples.)


Ordinary Time — derived from Ordinal meaning Order (1st-2nd-3rd)

so we sing the last of our carols for this Liturgical Year.
Ordinary Time begins on Mon Jan 11.


Felix-Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) born in Boulogne-sur-mer
France to a family of organists and organ builders; studied
with his father then attended College Mariette (1840- harmony,
counterpoint, fugue, piano, violin, viola). From 1853 was organist,
choirmaster, Conservatory teacher, private instructor, concertizer.
In 1871 moved to Paris and was organist at La Trinite Church and
Trocadero Palace; 1879-1904 concert tours in Europe and USA;
1894- Schola Cantorum co-founder and teacher (Gregorian chant,
counterpoint, organ); 1896- Paris Conservatory organ instructor;
1902- Notre Dame honorary organist. Composed 400+ pieces.


Noels Opus 60 (1883-86, pub 1886) are pieces based on Gregorian
chants, and on ancient Christmas carols from France, Scotland,
Belgium, Spain, England, Poland.

The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper):

muneribus adorare Dominum (We have seen his star in the East,
and we have come with our gifts, to worship the Lord).


Otto Malling (1848-1915), was born in Copenhagen Denmark,
where he remained throughout his life. Associated with:
Copenhagen Music Conservatory (student 1869-71, teacher
1885-, professor 1889-, director 1899-); Choral Society
(1871-84); Concertforeningen (1874-93). Organist: Sankt
Petri Kirke (1878-); Helligaandskirken (1891-); Vor Frue
Kirke Domkirke (1900-). He wrote an orchestration textbook
(1894/7?), and composed many arch-Romantic programmatic
pieces, in a harmonic idiom dominated by French Romanticism,
for: organ, voice, chorus, orchestra, chamber instruments.


The Prelude and Postlude are Stemningsbilleder (mood-pictures)
attempting to depict New Testament Gospel passages, samples of a
high point in Danish Romantic-era sacred music. De hellige tre
Konger [The Holy Three Kings] (Opus 84) contains seven movements:
1. Christmas Morn; 2. Where is the King of the Jews; 3. The
Chiefpriests and Scribes; 4. To Bethlehem; 5. Worship; 6. Herod;
7 Homeward.
