The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper): Venite post me: faciam vos piscatores hominum: at illi, relictis retibus et navi, secuti sunt Dominum (Follow me; I will make you fishers of men; whereupon they, leaving their nets and their boat, followed the Lord).


Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) born in Hamburg Germany, was a child prodigy with education strictly monitored by his father. String Octet (1825) and Overture to Midsummer Night's Dream (1826) demonstrated his brilliance. First to revive interest in J S Bach, directed St Matthew Passion (Berlin 1829). Visited Scotland (1829); revisited Britain nine times, toured as conductor, pianist, organist; held celebrity status (invitations from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert). Conducted Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (1836-), founded Leipzig Conservatory (1843). Composed oratorios, symphonies, overtures, operas, concertos, songs, chamber, piano, organ works.


"How lovely are the messengers"
is a movement from his first oratorio St Paul (1835).


Three Preludes and Fugues (1837)
was written in the space of one week while not occupied with revivals of music by Bach (1685-1750), Mozart (1756-1791), Beethoven (1770-1827).

Norman Warren (1934-) was born in London England, and educated at Dulwich College in South London; studied music and theology at Corpus Christi College and Ridley Hall (Cambridge, BA 1958, MA 1962). Ordained (1960) in the Church of England; curate of Bedworth Warwickshire; vicar of St Paul's Leamington Spa; Rector of Morden; Archdeacon and Canon of Rochester; retired (2000). A gifted musician and a prolific writer and composer of hymn tunes and texts, songs, anthems, musical plays, instrumental pieces (mostly organ).

so we sing the last of our carols for this Liturgical Year.
Ordinary Time begins on Mon Jan 12.


The school returned from their Christmas Vacation last
Mon Jan 5; their special Masses for January are this past
Fri Jan 9 at 8 am, and this weekend Sat Jan 10 at 5 pm Vigil
Mass; Lectors are from Grade Two and Grade Three; Music is
led by the School Choir (directed by Rebecca Monson).


Felix-Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) born in Boulogne-sur-mer
France to a family of organists and organ builders; studied
with his father then attended College Mariette (1840- harmony,
counterpoint, fugue, piano, violin, viola). From 1853 was organist,
choirmaster, Conservatory teacher, private instructor, concertizer.
In 1871 moved to Paris and was organist at La Trinite Church and
Trocadero Palace; 1879-1904 concert tours in Europe and USA;
1894- Schola Cantorum co-founder and teacher (Gregorian chant,
counterpoint, organ); 1896- Paris Conservatory organ instructor;
1902- Notre Dame honorary organist. Composed 400+ pieces.


Noels Opus 60 (1883-86, pub 1886) are pieces based on Gregorian
chants and ancient Christmas carols from France, Scotland, Belgium,
Spain, England, Poland.

Thank you to all who were able to attend the Sun Dec 21 Vespers and Messiah Sing-Along Concert. There were 22 instruments and 22 voices leading the music; do plan to attend future concerts as they are announced!


Francois Clement Theodore Dubois (1837-1924) born in Rosnay Marne France, began early musical studies at Rheims Cathedral then attended Paris Conservatory; 1861-66 in Italy after winning Prix de Rome; 1866 in Paris as teacher, organist, composer; 1867 published oratorio "Les sept parole du Christ" (The Seven Last Words Of Christ); thereafter divided time between Conservatory (professor, director) and Church (1868- Madeleine choirmaster, 1871- Sainte Clotilde organist, 1877- Madeleine organist). Lightly praised and often overlooked among his French predecessors (Berlioz, Gounod), contemporaries (Saint-Saens, Franck, Faure), successors (Debussy, Ravel, Satie); produced lasting religious and secular pieces (organ, orchestral instruments, voice) shortly before musical tastes changed from the romantic style; wrote six textbooks on composition and harmony.


"Noel" from "Twelve New Pieces (1892)" is a set of variations on a French Christmas Carol.


"Marche des Rois Mages" from "Twelve Pieces (1886)" depicts the three kings guided by the star (high-pitched sustained tone), visit with Herod, presentation of gifts to Jesus, return home.
