The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper): Quod dico vobis in tenebris, dicite in lumine, dicit Dominus; et quod in aure auditis, praedicate super tecta (That which I tell you in the dark, utter in the light, says the Lord; and that which you hear whispered into your ear, proclaim upon the housetops).


Ut queant laxis is part of an antiphon for the Feast of the Birth of Saint John The Baptist (Jun 24). Each phrase begins on a note one step higher than the previous, and the corresponding syllables of the text are the source of "Ut(Do)-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol".


John Ebenezer William West (1863-1929) born in Hackney London England to a musical family (father: organist, North-East London Academy of Music founder; mother: professional soprano; sister: professional contralto, pianist, teacher). Taught by father and Westminster Abbey organist Sir Frederick Bridge. Novello & Co employee (associate editor 1884-, chief editor/advisor 1897-1929). Royal Academy of Music (Associate 1898, Fellow 1919); Royal College of Organists (Fellow 189_). Organist posts in London (St Mary Bourdon St 1884-, St John Jerusalem South Hackney 1891-, St Augustine Queens Gate 1897-1902). Conducted the Railway Clearing House Male-Voice Choir, and various choral societies and choirs in London, Reading, Croydon, Warlingham. Composed or edited ~500 pieces.
