Memento verbi tui servo tuo, Domine in quo mihi spem dedisti:

word to your servant, O Lord, in which you caused me to hope;
this has been my comfort in my affliction).

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) was born in Ansfelden Austria;
his schoolmaster-organist father taught him music; later he
studied at the Augustinian monastery in Sankt Florian (upper
Austria) and in 1851 became its organist. 1855-64 studied music
(counterpoint, various composers); 1868- Vienna Conservatory
music theory teacher; toured as organist 1869 France, 1871 England;
1875- Vienna University teacher. Composed symphonies, masses,
sacred choral works including motets, chamber works.

Christus factus est sets the Second Reading (Phil 2:8-9 Christ
became obedient to the point of death ... a name above every other name).

William Croft (1678-1727) was born in Nether Eatington
(Warwickshire England) and was a choirboy at the Chapel Royal.
As an adult: organist at several churches including Westminster Abbey,
member and director at Chapel Royal. Composed: sonatas (flute, organ,
harpsichord); theater songs and instrumentals; "Twelve Voluntaries"
are from a manuscript now in the British Library. His sacred music
includes anthems, Anglican services (morning, communion, evening,
burial); hymn tunes (e.g., see Hymnal # 343).
