The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper):
Factus est repente de caelo sonus advenientis spiritus
vehementis, ubi erant sedentes, alleluia; et repleti sunt
omnes Spiritu Sancto, loquentes magnalia Dei, alleluia,
alleluia (Suddenly, a sound came from heaven like the rush
of a mighty wind, in the place where they were sitting,
alleluia; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and announced the great things God had done, alleluia, alleluia).


This weekend the Easter Season concludes after Sunday Vespers
(Evening Prayer). On Monday we resume Ordinary Time (Week 9). The
traditional sunrise-noon-sunset prayer changes from "Regina Caeli"
to "Angelus" until Easter Vigil 2010.


Felix-Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) born in Boulogne-sur-mer
France to a family of organists and organ builders; began studies
with his father; 1849- St Nicholas sub-organist, College Mariette
student (harmony, counterpoint, fugue, piano, violin, viola);
1853- St Joseph organist; 1857- St Nicholas choirmaster, Boulogne
Conservatory teacher; 1860- Brussels Conservatory student; taught
privately, gave concerts. Moved to Paris; 1871-1901 La Trinite
organist; 1879-97 Trocadero Palace concerts of organ music of all
historical periods and countries; 1879-1904 concert tours in Europe
and USA; 1894- Schola Cantorum co-founder and teacher (Gregorian chant,
counterpoint, organ); 1896- Paris Conservatory organ instructor;
1902- Notre Dame honorary organist. Composed 400+ pieces, over 50
are in "L'organiste Liturgique" (1884)(Opus 65), a ten-volume
collection for liturgical use based on Gregorian chant melodies.

Andrew Moore (1954-) was born in Hayes, Greater London, England. At the Royal Academy of Music in London he studied violin and organ and also took the advanced orchestral conducting course. He was ordained a priest in 1982 as a member of the Benedictine community at Downside Abbey having obtained a degree in theology at Cambridge University (Christ’s College). At Downside he taught music and religious studies and was a Housemaster and Bursar. As monastic and school choirmaster for many years he helped to maintain a high standard of liturgical music. From 1993-95 he was parish priest at the Downside Parish of Little Malvern, the church where Elgar lies buried. In 1996 he stepped aside from monastic life for a more active ministry in the Diocese of Portsmouth as a parish priest (St Francis Ascot, Sacred Heart Lambourn, Our Lady of Lourdes Hungerford). He has composed mass settings, responsorial psalms, motets, anthems and carols, a song cycle and many other songs, chamber and orchestral music.

This weekend at the Saturday 5 pm (Vigil) Mass the Music is led by the School Choir (Rebecca Monson, dir). This is their last weekend of this school year. We thank them for their dedication.


Malcolm Archer (1952-) was Organist and Master of the Choristers at Wells Cathedral, and conductor of the Wells Oratorio Society and the City of Bristol Choir. In Sep 2004 he was Organist of St Paul's Cathedral in London, then in Aug 2007 he took up a new position as Director of Chapel Music and Organist at Winchester College where he is in charge of the Winchester College Chapel Choir. He also teaches, composes, and gives recitals.

On this Mother's Day, the 11 am Prelude is Schubert's "Ave Maria",
requested in memory of the 100th birthday of Marie McKay Kirrene,
by her children (Carol Spain, Michael Kirrene, John Kirrene).


Richard Knight (1965-) is a former Organ Scholar at St John's
College, Oxford, Director of Music at Dean Close School, Cheltenham
England, and composes and conducts.


Thank You to all who were able to attend the Messiah
Sing-Along-Play-Along Concert last weekend, featuring our
Saint David of Wales Festival Choir and Soloists accompanied
by a Chamber Orchestra, joined by many local amateur singers
and instrumentalists! The music-making was excellent as always,
and the snacks/desserts/beverages tables had many delicious
items from which to choose both before the concert and during
the intermission.
