Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum)
(Wis 16:20) Panem de caelo dedisti nobis, Domine, habentem
omne delectamentum, et omnem saporem suavitatis (You gave
us bread from heaven, O Lord, having in it all that is
delicious, and the sweetness of every taste).
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was born in Hamburg Germany to a
musician father (horn, double bass) and seamstress mother, and
spent much of his professional life in Vienna Austria. He composed
for piano, chamber ensembles, symphony orchestra, voice, chorus,
and destroyed many works and left others unpublished.
Ach, arme Welt (Opus 110 No 2) is part of Three Motets for mixed
chorus (1889): Alas vain world, I see your snares; / With guile
they take us unawares, / Yet in your power I languish, / yet in
your power I languish. // In time, false world, your empty show /
Will pass away, as well I know, / In woe and bitter anguish, /
in woe and bitter anguish. // Your pomp, your wealth, last but
a day; / In death and need they fade away, / Your gold is naught
but worthless clay: / God grant the peace I cherish, / God grant
the peace I cherish.
