The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper):
(Mt 16:24) Qui vult venire post me, abneget semetipsum;
et tollat crucem suam, et sequatur me (If a man wishes to
come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross
and follow me).
Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) was born in Ansfelden Austria;
his schoolmaster-organist father taught him music; later he
studied at the Augustinian monastery in Sankt Florian (upper
Austria) and in 1851 became its organist. 1855-64 studied
music (counterpoint, various composers); 1868- Vienna
Conservatory music theory teacher; toured as organist
1869 France, 1871 England; 1875- Vienna University teacher.
Composed symphonies, chamber works, masses, sacred choral works
including motets.
The motet (WAB 11) (1884) sets Phil 2:8-9 (Christus factus
est pro nobis obediens usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis.
Propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum, et dedit illi nomen,
quod est super omne nomen) (Christ became obedient to death,
even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name that is above every name).
The Prelude (WAB 130) (c1846) was written for organ.
The Postlude (WAB 111) (c1861-2) is a transcription of String
Quartet in C minor, movement three "Scherzo".
