Music Notes:
The Mass has three music categories. Dialogues are exchanges
between priest and people; texts never change. Ordinary (Kyrie,
Gloria, Creed, Sanctus, Agnus) are intended for all people to
sing; texts never change. Propers (Introit, Graduale,
Alleluia/Tract, Offertory, Communion) are intended for cantor
or choir to sing; texts change every week. In Sep 1958 permission
was given for In/Of/Co Propers to be substituted with hymns at
Low Mass; Vatican Council II (1962-1965) re-asserted the preference
for Propers; in 1969 the hymn permission was shown to be superseded
by Council desires of "singing the Mass not just singing during Mass";
in Sep 1993 this same clarification was repeated. Masses without
singing were to speak a text (see the Missalettes, these spoken
texts do not always match the sung Proper texts).
Listen to these marvelous Proper texts; they help direct our thoughts
toward God, shape our meditation, give insights into the other Scriptures
of the Day (First Reading, Psalm, Second Reading, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel).
Do join in singing the Doxology.
Introit (Lent-5): [Antiphon] Give sentence with me, O God,
and defend the cause of my soul against the ungodly people;
deliver me, and rid me from the deceitful and wicked; for you,
O Lord, art my God, and my strong salvation. [Psalm] O send out
your light and your truth, that they may lead me; and bring me
unto your holy hill, and to your dwelling. [Doxology] Glory be to
the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was
in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen. [Antiphon repeated]
Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper):
(Jn 8:10,11) Nemo te condemnavit, mulier? Nemo, Domine.
Nec ego te condemnabo; iam amplius noli peccare.
(Woman, has no one condemned you? No one, Lord.
Neither do I condemn you; go and do not sin again.)
