Happy Liturgical New Year to all! The New Church Year begins
this weekend, and for the next twelve months our Scripture
texts will be found in the Hymnals under the headings "Sunday A"
and "Weekday 1". We begin the eleventh year of use of our hymnals
(blessed and distributed Dec 2000). During the Penitential Season
of Advent, the Kyrie becomes more prominent as we set aside the
Gloria except for feast days (Dec 8 Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception, Dec 12 Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe).

Domine Dominus noster, quam admirabile est
nomen tuum in universa terra! (O Lord our governor,
how admirable is your name in all the earth!)

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) born in Hamburg Germany,
was a child prodigy with education strictly monitored by
his father. String Octet (1825) and Overture to Midsummer
Night's Dream (1826) demonstrated his brilliance. First to
revive interest in J S Bach, directed St Matthew Passion
(Berlin 1829). Visited Scotland (1829); revisited Britain
nine times, toured as conductor, pianist, organist; held
celebrity status (invitations from Queen Victoria and Prince
Albert). Conducted Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (1836-),
founded Leipzig Conservatory (1843). Composed oratorios,
symphonies, overtures, operas, concertos, songs, chamber,
piano, organ works. His oratorio Elijah (1846, opus 70)
premiered at Birmingham Triennial Music Festival, depicts
various events in the life Elijah, taken from Old Testament
(1 Kings and 2 Kings) using an English translation by William
Bartholomew (who served as his text author/translator for many
of his works during his time in England).

Three Preludes and Fugues (1837) was written in the space of one
week while not occupied with revivals of music by Bach (1685-1750),
Mozart (1756-1791), Beethoven (1770-1827).

The Anniversary of the Dedication of our Parish Church occurs
on Monday (11 Oct 1953 by Bp Mitty); Sun at 11 am the choir sings
at Offertory the Gradual (the Proper text replaced every week by
the Responsorial Psalm) for this Solemnity: Locus iste a Deo factus
est, inaestimabile sacramentum, irreprehensibilis est (This place
is the work of God, a mystery surpassing all comprehension, above
all reproach). The polyphonic setting of the text is by Anton
Bruckner (1824-1896) who was born in Ansfelden Austria; his
schoolmaster-organist father taught him music; later he studied
at the Augustinian monastery in Sankt Florian (upper Austria)
and in 1851 became its organist. 1855-64 studied music (counterpoint,
various composers); 1868- Vienna Conservatory music theory teacher;
toured as organist 1869 France, 1871 England; 1875- Vienna University
teacher. Composed symphonies, masses, sacred choral works including
motets, chamber works.

Roland de Lassus (c1530-1594), born in Mons Belgium, worked
for several patrons from age eight, giving rise to the legend
that he was three times abducted for his beautiful voice. In
Italy he adopted the name by which he is best known, Orlando
di Lasso, and obtained his first post as choirmaster at St John
Lateran Rome. The bulk of his career was spent in Munich
(1556/7-, 1560- head of chapel) in service of Duke Albrecht V
of Bavaria. He set the text of the Offertory Antiphon
(Graduale Romanum) (Ps 136:1) Super flumina Babylonis,
illic sedimus, et flevimus, dum recordaremur tui, Sion
(Upon the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and we wept,
as we remembered you, O Zion).

Franciscus Florentinus (Flor) Peeters (1903-1986), born in Tielen
(near Antwerp) Belgium, graduated Lemmens Institute, organist at
St Rumoldus Cathedral (Mechelen), taught at Lemmens Institute and
Royal Conservatory (Antwerp). Composed for keyboard, voice (songs,
masses), orchestra, chamber instruments. Aria (1945, opus 51) has
a lyrical melody supported by repeated chords; Festival Voluntary
(1957, opus 87) is a joyous piece featuring tonal ambiguity,
syncopated rhythms, chordal fanfares.

In Paris France at L'eglise Sainte-Marie-Madeleine (the church
of Saint Mary Magdalene), the organists of the Great Organ
(located on the west wall) were distinct from organists of the
Choir Organ (located near the sanctuary). Among the former were
Fernand de la Tombelle (assistant to Theodore Dubois) and Gabriel
Faure (assistant to Camille Saint-Saens).

Fernand de la Tombelle (1854-1928) first studied music with his
mother, who was a pupil of Liszt and Thalberg. Later he studied
organ with Guilmant and composition with Theodore Dubois at the
Paris Conservatory.

Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) studied in Paris at Ecole Niedermeyer
(a school which prepared church organists and choir directors).
Cantique de Jean Racine (Opus 11)(1864-65) won first prize when he
graduated; first performed in 1866; published c1875-76. The text,
"Verbe égal au Trés-Haut", is a paraphrase by Jean Racine (Hymnes
traduites du Bréviaire romain, 1688) of the pseudo-ambrosian hymn
for Tuesday matins, Consors paterni luminis.

Josquin Desprez (c1440-1521) perhaps a native of the Vermandois
region of Picardy Italy; sang (1459-72) at Milan Cathedral,
cantor (1476) for Galeazzo Maria Sforza, and (1476-1504) for
Cardinal Ascanio Sforza, during which he spent some time in Rome.
Went to France, probably at Louis XII court; choirmaster (1503)
at Ferrara court; then (1504) in Conde at Notre Dame; maybe at
court (1508-11) at Margaret of Austria. Several portraits
survive, one attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.

The "Ave Maria" translation is: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord
is with you, fair virgin, Hail to you whose conception, of holy
joy, fills heaven and earth with new rejoicing. Hail to you whose
birth we celebrated, like the day-star rising, foretelling the
true Sun. Hail, holy and humble one, fruitful without a man, you
whose annunciation was our salvation. Hail, true virginity, spotless
chastity, whose purification cleansed us also. Hail to you who excel
in all the angelic virtues, you whose assumption glorified us also.

Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan MVO (1842–1900) was an English
composer, of Irish and Italian descent, best known for his
operatic collaborations with librettist W S Gilbert. However,
from 1854 to 1857 he was a Chapel Royal chorister (in 1857 he
harmonized four stately plain-song melodies). He studied in Leipzig
then returned to London and was church organist at two churches
(1861-1869 St Michael's Chester Square Pimlico; 1867-1872 St Peter's
Cranley Gardens Kensington) during which he composed 50+ hymn tunes
(including Onward Christian Soldiers (1871)) and other church music.
His anthem "O taste and see how gracious the Lord is (1867)"
sets Psalm 34:8,9,10,11 for choir (SATB) and organ.

James Bremner (17__-1780) was a Philadelphia musician who taught
New Jersey Declaration of Independence signer Francis Hopkinson.

William Selby (1738-1798) was a Boston organist before and after
the Revolutionary War, during which he was a shopkeeper.

it was composed by Richard Proulx (1937-2010), a prolific American
composer and editor of church music, who was long associated with
Holy Name Cathedral (Chicago).

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) born in Hamburg Germany, was a child
prodigy with education strictly monitored by his father. String
Octet (1825) and Overture to Midsummer Night's Dream (1826) demonstrated
his brilliance. First to revive interest in J S Bach, directed St Matthew
Passion (Berlin 1829). Visited Scotland (1829); revisited Britain nine
times, toured as conductor, pianist, organist; held celebrity status
(invitations from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert). Conducted Leipzig
Gewandhaus Orchestra (1836-), founded Leipzig Conservatory (1843).
Composed oratorios, symphonies, overtures, operas, concertos, songs,
chamber, piano, organ works.

"Above all praise" is from his Six Anthems (Opus 79).

Three Preludes and Fugues (1837) was written in the space of one week
while not occupied with revivals of music by Bach (1685-1750), Mozart
(1756-1791), Beethoven (1770-1827).

John IV (1603-1656) was born at Vila Vicosa Portugal and
succeeded (1630) his father Teodosio II as Duke of Braganza.
Grandson of Duchess Catherine of Braganza who had in 1580
claimed the Portuguese crown and sparked the struggle for the
throne, John was acclaimed King by the voice of the people in
1640; a long war against Spain (Philip IV) ensued through 1668,
with fronts in Europe, Africa, Brazil. His son Afonso VI succeeded
him; his daughter Catherine of Braganza married King Charles II
of England. A patron of music and the arts, John collected a large
library (destroyed 1755, Lisbon earthquake). Among his writings is
a defense of Palestrina, and a Defense of Modern Music (1649).
His most famous composition is "Crux fidelis".

Carlos Seixas (1704-1742) born in Coimbra Portugal, assumed the
position of cathedral organist in his native town at age 14. From
1720 he was active at Santa Maria Cathedral and the court chapel
in Lisbon, where he was a highly regarded harpsichordist and a
keyboard teacher much sought after by the noble families of the capital.

José Marques e Silva (1778-1837) was a member of the Barnabite monastery
in Lisbon Portugal, and perhaps the most influential Portuguese musician
of the early nineteenth century in his dual capacity as teacher at the
Lisbon Cathedral music school and, from 1808, master of the court chapel.

William Byrd (1534-1623) was born in England, and
remained Catholic during the religious turbulence under
Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, Elizabeth I. The last,
ignoring his religion, granted him a monopoly of printing
music-paper and music.

The 1300s text ("Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine,
vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine, cujus latus
perforatum unda fluxit sanguine: esto nobis praegustatum in
mortis examine. O dulcis, O pie, O Jesu fili Mariae, miserere
mei. Amen.")(Hail true body born of the Virgin Mary, truly
suffered, sacrificed on the cross for man, from whose pierced
side blood and water flowed: be our food in our final trial.
O sweet, O kind, O Jesus, son of Mary, have mercy on me. Amen.)
was a source of meditation for Byrd; he reflected on "the very
sentences" as he composed "diligently and earnestly turning them
over in his mind"; he revised his music at least twice before
his final 1605 version.

Franciscus Florentinus (Flor) Peeters (1903-1986), born in Tielen
Belgium (near Antwerp), graduated Lemmens Institute, organist at
St Rumoldus Cathedral (Mechelen), taught at Lemmens Institute and
Royal Conservatory (Antwerp). Composed for keyboard, voice (songs,
masses), orchestra, chamber instruments, using a familiar but rich
musical language and adopting classical forms. Aria (1945, opus 51)
has a lyrical melody supported by repeated chords; Festival Voluntary
(1957, opus 87) is a joyous piece featuring tonal ambiguity,
syncopated rhythms, chordal fanfares.

1853- St Joseph organist; 1857- St Nicholas choirmaster, Boulogne
Conservatory teacher; 1860- Brussels Conservatory student; taught
privately, gave concerts. Moved to Paris; 1871-1901 La Trinite
organist; 1879-97 Trocadero Palace concerts of organ music of all
historical periods and countries; 1879-1904 concert tours in Europe
and USA; 1894- Schola Cantorum co-founder and teacher (Gregorian chant,
counterpoint, organ); 1896- Paris Conservatory organ instructor;
1902- Notre Dame honorary organist. Composed 400+ pieces including
"L'organiste Liturgique" (1884) (Opus 65), a ten-volume collection
for liturgical use based on Gregorian chant melodies. The Prelude is

Charles Marie Widor (1844-1937), born in Lyon France, lived in
Paris and worked as St Sulpice organist (1870-1934) and Conservatory
professor (organ 1890-, composition 1896-); wrote operas and songs,
orchestral and chamber music; famed for his ten organ symphonies which
followed the orchestral symphony multi-movement plan and explored the
many tonal possibilities of the St Sulpice organ (finished 1863 by
Cavaille-Coll, mechanically advanced, largest of the time, 5 manuals,
102 stops). Organ Symphony IV in F (opus 13 no 4, 1887) is in six
movements: the third is our Prelude and the sixth is our Postlude.

of Aaron Copland. His research into Southeastern USA shape note tunes,
folk hymns, white spirituals, led to his arrangement of "My Shepherd

Peter Philips (c1560–1628), eminent English composer, organist,
Catholic priest exiled to Flanders, was one of the greatest keyboard
virtuosos of his time, and transcribed or arranged several Italian

for his instruments. Some of his keyboard works are found in the
Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. Philips also wrote many sacred choral works.

Low Mass; Vatican Council II (1962-1965) re-asserted the preference
for Propers; in 1969 the hymn permission was shown to be superseded
by Council desires of "singing the Mass not just singing during Mass";

texts do not always match the sung Proper texts).

Today is "Laetare Sunday", so named from the opening
word of the Introit (Isaiah 66:10-11 and Psalm 121:1).
The special signs of joy (flowers, rose vestments,
greater use of instruments) permitted this day encourage
us in our course through this Penitential Season of Lent,

three weeks remaining.

Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan MVO (1842–1900) was an English composer,
of Irish and Italian descent, best known for his operatic collaborations
with librettist W S Gilbert. "The Prodigal Son (1869)", an oratorio for
choir and soloists (Soprano, Contralto, Tenor, Bass), is the first setting
of this Gospel of Luke text. He completed it in about three weeks;
it reveals a strong musical influence of Felix Mendelssohn.

The Mass has three music categories. The Dialogues are
exchanges between priest and people. The Ordinary (Kyrie,
Gloria, Creed, Sanctus, Agnus) are intended for the people
to sing; the texts remain the same every week. The Propers
(Introit, Graduale, Alleluia/Tract, Offertory, Communion)
are intended for the cantor or choir to sing; the texts
change every week; in Sep 1958 permission was given for these
Propers to be substituted with hymns at Low Mass; Vatican Council II
(1962-1965) promoted the Proper texts; in 1969 the hymn permission
was shown to be superseded by Council desires to "sing the Mass"
not "sing during Mass"; in Sep 1993 this same clarification
was repeated. For the occasion in which singing was not able
to occur, a spoken text was provided (as seen in the Missalettes)
and to be used (these spoken texts do not usually match the sung
Proper texts).

During the Season of Lent (for five weekends) the Proper Introit
will be sung (in English) at the beginning of all weekend Masses;
it consists of: Antiphon (fragment of Scripture), Psalm verse,
Doxology (Glory be ...), repeated Antiphon. The melody is well-known
to all who attend the Sun 8:30 am Mass; it has been in use for almost
fourteen years! For those attending Sat 5 pm Mass and Sun 11 am Mass,
this will be a new experience. All are encouraged to listen to these
marvelous Scriptures which help direct our thoughts toward, and shape
our meditations of, the depth of Worship that is the Mass, and may
produce profound insights into the other Scriptures of the Day (First
Reading, Psalm, Second Reading, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel). You are
welcome to sing the Doxology.

France to a family of organists and organ builders; studied

choirmaster, Conservatory teacher, private instructor, concertizer.
In 1871 moved to Paris and was organist at La Trinite Church and
Trocadero Palace; 1879-1904 concert tours in Europe and USA;
1894- Schola Cantorum co-founder and teacher (Gregorian chant,
counterpoint, organ); 1896- Paris Conservatory organ instructor;
1902- Notre Dame honorary organist. Composed 400+ pieces.

Noels Opus 60 (1883-86, pub 1886) are pieces based on Gregorian
chants, and on ancient Christmas carols from France, Scotland,
Belgium, Spain, England, Poland.

Otto Malling (1848-1915), was born in Copenhagen Denmark,
where he remained throughout his life. Associated with:
Copenhagen Music Conservatory (student 1869-71, teacher
1885-, professor 1889-, director 1899-); Choral Society
(1871-84); Concertforeningen (1874-93). Organist: Sankt
Petri Kirke (1878-); Helligaandskirken (1891-); Vor Frue
Kirke Domkirke (1900-). He wrote an orchestration textbook
(1894/7?), and composed many arch-Romantic programmatic
pieces, in a harmonic idiom dominated by French Romanticism,
for: organ, voice, chorus, orchestra, chamber instruments.

The Prelude and Postlude are Stemningsbilleder (mood-pictures)
attempting to depict New Testament Gospel passages, samples of a
high point in Danish Romantic-era sacred music. De hellige tre
Konger [The Holy Three Kings] (Opus 84) contains seven movements:
1. Christmas Morn; 2. Where is the King of the Jews; 3. The
Chiefpriests and Scribes; 4. To Bethlehem; 5. Worship; 6. Herod;
7 Homeward.

(1906-34), then titulaire (1934-71). "Conditor alme siderum" is the
first of his "Sixteen Chorales" (1942, opus 38). "Reveillez-vous,
la voix des veillerus" is one of his "Seventy-nine Chorales" (1931,
opus 28) known in English as "Sleepers wake".

Happy Liturgical New Year to all! The New Church Year begins
this weekend, and for the next twelve months our Scripture texts
will be found in the Hymnals under the headings "Sunday C" and
"Weekday 2". We begin the tenth year of use of the Catholic
Community Hymnal (blessed and distributed Dec 2000). During Advent,
our Introductory Rite is noticeably more penitential: the Kyrie
becomes more prominent as we set aside the Gloria except for feast
days (Dec 8 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Dec 12 Feast
of Our Lady of Guadalupe).

The Communion Antiphon (Graduale Romanum Chant Proper):
(Ps 83:13) Dominus dabit benignitatem; et terra nostra dabit
fructum sum (The Lord will bestow his loving kindness; and our
land will yield its fruit).

Jean Titelouze (1563-1633) at a young age became organist at the
cathedral in Rouen France, and remained there the rest of his life.
Among his many compositions are three versets on the melody of
"Conditor alme siderum" (see Hymnal 195); the prelude and postlude this
weekend are his first and third versets (first with melody in pedals,
third with melody hidden among other notes in manuals and pedals).

Francois Clement Theodore Dubois (1837-1924) born in Rosnay
Marne France, began early musical studies at Rheims Cathedral,
then attended Paris Conservatory; 1861-66 in Italy after winning
Prix de Rome; 1866 in Paris as teacher, organist, composer;
thereafter divided time between Conservatory (1871- harmony prof,
1891- composition prof, 1896-1905 director) and Church
(1868- Madeleine choirmaster, 1871- Sainte Clotilde organist,
1877- Madeleine organist). Composed religious and secular pieces
(organ, orchestral instruments, voice); wrote six textbooks on
composition and harmony.

The Prelude ("Twelve New Pieces" 1892) and Postlude ("Twelve
Pieces" 1886) were selected, respectively, as a musical meditation
for the poignant Gospel, and commentary on the majestic First Reading.

Next weekend (Nov 22) is the Feast Day of Saint Cecilia,
Patroness of Music, and the day of our Quarterly (Beige Envelope)
Music Fund Collection. We thank you for your generosity which
enables us to locate, prepare, and present throughout the year
music properly suited to the Church, whether in Liturgy or in
Concert. The first of sixteen Vatican II documents, Sacrosanctum
Concilium (Dec 1963), devotes Chapter Six to Sacred Music,
re-echoing what the Church has said century after century about
the importance, qualities, purposes, of the "treasure of inestimable
value, greater even than that of any other art". We seek to attain
and uphold these high expectations.

Our next concert is Messiah Part One on Sun Dec 20 at 4 pm.
This oratorio by G F Handel is in three parts. The entire work
contains Scripture passages in English; some verses are composed
for soloist, others for chorus. Professional and semi-professional
instrumentalists (violin, viola, cello, bass, recorder, oboe,
bassoon, etc) will accompany all singing. You are invited to
attend to hear this fine music, and anyone is welcome to join
in singing the choruses (bring a score, or "rent" one of ours).

to attend!

sake of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven).

Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548-1611) was born in Sanchidrian (Avila)
Spain. Around 1564 he went to Rome, where he joined the monastery
founded by St Ignatius Loyola as part of the fight against Lutheranism.
He may have studied with Palestrina around this time. In 1575 he was
ordained as a priest, after a period of service at the monastery as
maestro di cappella. In 1586 he returned to Spain, this time in the
service of the Dowager Empress Maria, who was entering the convent of
Descalzas Reales in Madrid. Victoria remained at the convent until
the end of his life, performing several roles: priest, composer, choir
director, organist.

"O quam gloriosum", found in his first book of motets (1572),
is composed for the Feast of All Saints (O how fair and glorious
is that kingdom, wherein the saints dwell, joyful in their Lord
and Savior, all clothed in shining raiment, following after the Lamb,
wherever he shall lead).

Alan Viner (1951-) born in Gloucester England, began piano
at age 8, and organ at age 13, attended University of Reading
(Honours Degree 1973), Saint Luke's College Exeter (PGCE 1974),
Royal College of Music (ARCM 1976). He was Organist and
Choirmaster (St Mary's Berkeley, St Nicholas's Hardwicke) and
Head/Director of Music at several schools in Hertfordshire,
Gloucester, Shrewsbury. Since 1989 he teaches privately, composes,
accompanies, and since 1997 is member of the Ellesmere College
(Shropshire) peripatetic team.

The "Arietta" presents a pensive melody weaving above and
below independent accompaniment and pedal, while the "Finale"
is a majestic piece of purposeful stride.

This weekend, as part of the Fall Festival, the Parish Choir
(usually singing each Sunday 11 am Mass) attends the Sat 5 pm Vigil
Mass and offers their vocal support. The Choir is joined by several
Guest Instrumentalists (harpsichord, organ, recorder, violin, cello)
who have previously assisted in various Liturgies and Concerts; we
are very grateful for their accompaniment of Monteverdi's Psalm 112
Beatus vir (Happy are those who fear the LORD, who greatly delight
in God's commands. Their descendants shall be mighty in the land,
generation upright and blessed. Wealth and riches shall be in their
homes; their prosperity shall endure forever. They shine through the
darkness, a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful, and
just. All goes well for those gracious in lending, who conduct their
affairs with justice. They shall never be shaken; the just shall be
remembered forever. They shall not fear an ill report; their hearts
are steadfast, trusting the LORD. Their hearts are tranquil, without
fear, till at last they look down on their foes. Lavishly they give
to the poor; their prosperity shall endure forever; their horn shall
be exalted in honor. The wicked shall be angry to see this; they will
gnash their teeth and waste away; the desires of the wicked come to
nothing. Glory to the Father ...).

John Stanley (1713-1786), born in London England, wrote much music,
including three sets of Ten Voluntaries which, when published,
made him the most influential composer of the form, and the
format was often imitated by his contemporaries. His Voluntary
Set One Number One (1745) is in four sections and provides tempos
and registrations and indicates that some phrases are to be "eccho"
and therefore both gallery and antiphonal organ stops will be heard
in alternation.

The Anniversary of the Dedication of our Parish Church occurs
this weekend (11 Oct 1953 by Bp Mitty); at 11 am the choir sings
at Offertory the Gradual (the Proper text replaced every week by
the Responsorial Psalm) for our Solemnity: Locus iste a Deo factus
est, inaestimabile sacramentum, irreprehensibilis est (This place
is the work of God, a mystery surpassing all comprehension, above
all reproach). The setting of the text is by Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)
who was born in Ansfelden Austria; his schoolmaster-organist father
taught him music; later he studied at the Augustinian monastery in
Sankt Florian (upper Austria) and in 1851 became its organist.
1855-64 studied music (counterpoint, various composers); 1868- Vienna
Conservatory music theory teacher; toured as organist 1869 France,
1871 England; 1875- Vienna University teacher. Composed symphonies,
masses, sacred choral works including motets, chamber works.

Roland de Lassus (c1530-1594), born in Mons Belgium, worked
for several patrons from age eight, giving rise to the legend
that he was three times abducted for his beautiful voice.
In Italy he adopted the name by which he is best known,
Orlando di Lasso, and obtained his first post as choirmaster
at St John Lateran Rome. The bulk of his career was spent in
Munich (1556/7-, 1560- head of chapel) in service of Duke
Albrecht V of Bavaria.

Henry Thomas Smart (1813-1879) born in London England,
son of Henry Smart (music publisher, orchestra director,
violinist) and nephew of Sir George Thomas Smart (conductor,
St George Windsor organist).

Thomas Adams (1785-1858) was born in London England, studied
under Thomas Busby, and served as organist at several prominent
London churches.

Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was born in Dublin Ireland,
an only son of accomplished amateur musicians (father sang bass and
played cello, mother played piano). In 1862 he came to London to study
music; 1870 won scholarship to Queens College Cambridge; 1873 Trinity
College organist; 1874-77 studies in Germany; 1874 BA; 1878 MA;
1883 honorary Oxford DMus; 1883 Royal College of Music composition
professor; 1887 Cambridge music professor; 1888 honorary Cambridge DMus;
1897- Leeds Philharmonic Society conductor; 1901- Leeds Festival conductor;
1902 knighted. An exacting but respected teacher, his pupils included:
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams,
John Ireland, Frank Bridge, Charles Wood, Geoffrey Shaw, Herbert Howells.
His secular music include orchestral works, concertos, chamber compositions,
songs, part-songs, madrigals, incidental pieces. His religious music includes
oratorios, requiem, services, motets, anthems, organ pieces.

even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name that is above every name).
The Prelude (WAB 130) (c1846) was written for organ.
The Postlude (WAB 111) (c1861-2) is a transcription of String
Quartet in C minor, movement three "Scherzo".

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), child prodigy, taught
by father Leopold (musician and composer at Salzburg court of
Prince-Archbishop Sigismund von Schrattenbach). Toured Austria,
Germany, France, England, Holland, Italy; later worked in Salzburg
court; went to Vienna (1781), worked as teacher, pianist, concert
promoter, composer. Wrote 600+ works (symphonies, oratorios, operas,
concertos, sonatas, chamber music, keyboard music, sacred music).
His Requiem (KV 626) was unfinished at his death. Its Sequence
"Dies Irae" manuscripts are fragmentary; in his handwriting are:
soprano, alto, tenor, bass, organ, bass and various string passages.
Within 100 days of his death, the fragments of this and all other
movements were enhanced and completed by Franz Xaver Sussmayr (1766-1803).
The (section five) text: Confutatis maledictis, Flammis acribus
addictis: Voca me cum benedictis. Oro supplex et acclinis,
Cor contritum quasi cinis: Gere curam mei finis (When the accused
are confounded, and doomed to flames of woe, call me among the

confirmet (The earth will be satisfied by the work of your
hands, O Lord, as you bring forth bread from the land and
wine to gladden the heart of man; oil to make his face shine,
and bread to strengthen man's heart).

Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) born in Pamiers France; studied
(age 9-20) in Paris at Ecole Niedermeyer (a school to prepare
church organists and choir directors); Saint-Sulpice asst choir
organist (1871); Eglise de la Madeleine sub organist (1874),
choirmaster (1877). In the 1890s his fortunes improved: successful
trip to Venice Italy; French provinces music conservatory inspector
(1892); titulaire (chief organist) at Madeleine (1896); Paris
Conservatory composition instructor (1896); Paris Conservatory
director (1905); hearing deteriorated (1909); retired (1920).

Francois Clement Theodore Dubois (1837-1924) born in Rosnay
Marne France, began early musical studies at Rheims Cathedral
then attended Paris Conservatory; 1861-66 in Italy after winning
Prix de Rome; 1866 in Paris as teacher, organist, composer; divided
time between Conservatory (professor, director) and Church
(1868- Madeleine choirmaster, 1871- Sainte Clotilde organist,
1877- Madeleine organist). Composed religious and secular pieces
(organ, orchestral instruments, voice); wrote six textbooks on
composition and harmony.

Today’s prelude comes from his "Twelve Pieces (1886)";
today’s postlude comes form his "Twelve New Pieces (1892)".

says the Lord).

Charles Callahan (1951-), born in Cambridge MA, is a graduate
of the Curtis Institute (Philadelphia) and Catholic University of
America. Former faculty member Middlebury College, Catholic
University, Rollins College. Director (2005-) of Vermont Conservatory
of Music. Prolific composer, author of two books on American organ
building, active as an organ consultant, recitalist, recording artist,
workshop leader throughout USA and Europe. A poetic translation of
"Adoro te devote" can be found in the Hymnal # 850.

Jean Titelouze (1563-1633) at a young age became organist at the
cathedral in Rouen, France, and remained there the rest of his life.
His surviving published (1623) music for organ: versets on twelve hymns,
and eight settings of the Magnificat, one for each mode.
In "Pange lingua (v3)" the tune is played slowly by the feet on the pedals,
while the hands weave harmonies above it on the manuals.

This is the weekend after First Friday; Sunday 11 am Mass:

Charles Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) had piano lessons
with Stamaty (1842) and Boely; entered Conservatoire (1848)
and studied with Halevy; his dazzling gifts early won him the
admiration of Gounod, Rossini, Berlioz, Liszt. Organist (1857-75)
at the Madeleine; teacher (1861-5) at the Ecole Niedermeyer.
Organized concerts, revived interest in older music (Bach,
Handel, Rameau), wrote on topics (musical, scientific, historical),
traveled often and widely (Europe, North Africa, South America),
co-founded (1871) Societe Nationale de Musique. Wrote sonatas,
chamber music, symphonies, concertos, symphonic poems, operas,
choral works, organ pieces. His Panis Angelicus (18__) sets the
last two stanzas of the hymn Sacris solemniis, composed by
St Thomas Aquinas for Matins of Corpus Christi and of the Votive
Office of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

us bread from heaven, O Lord, having in it all that is
delicious, and the sweetness of every taste).

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was born in Down Ampney
Gloucestershire England, child of vicar Arthur Vaughan Williams
and Margaret Susan Wedgwood (great-granddaughter of potter
Josiah Wedgwood); Charles Darwin was a great-uncle.
He studied piano and violin and attended Charterhouse School,
then studied at: Royal College of Music London; Trinity College
Cambridge; Paris Conservatory. His teachers included Charles
Villiers Stanford, Hubert Parry, Walter Parratt, Max Bruch,
Maurice Ravel. Among his friends were G E Moore, Bertrand Russell,
Leopold Stokowsi, Gustav Holst. In 1904 he discovered English folk
songs, travelling the countryside and transcribing and preserving many,
later incorporating melodies into his own music. His first big public
success was conducting his premiere of Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas
Tallis (at The Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester Cathedral).
He composed symphonies, chamber music, opera, choral music, film scores.
His organ pieces include Three Preludes (Bryn Calfaria, Rhosymedre,
Hyfrydol) on Welsh Hymn Tunes (1920).

Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), born in Sicily, was a
prolific opera composer, and father of several children
including the keyboard composer Domenico. Alessandro divided
his career between the Neapolitan court, and Santa Maria Maggiore
in Rome where he wrote many oratorios as well as a cappella motets
in the old style, such as his setting of The Offertory Antiphon
(Graduale Romanum Chant Proper) (Psalm 29:2,3) Exaltabo te Domine,
quoniam suscepisti me, nec delectasti inimicos meos super me;
Domine clamavi ad te, et sanasti me (I will extol you, O Lord,
for you have drawn me up, and have not allowed my enemies to
rejoice over me; O Lord, I called out unto you, and you healed me).

Domenico Zipoli (1688-1726) born in Prato Tuscany Italy, studied
in Florence (with cathedral music director) and Naples (with
Alessandro Scarlatti) and Bologna (with Lavinio Vannucci) and
Rome (with Bernardo Pasquini); became a Jesuit novice (1716);
went to Seville Spain to await passage to Argentina (1717,
Buenos Aires and Cordoba); continued his musical activities
while completing his philosophical and theological studies;
died (Jan) of tuberculosis before ordination. Old World works
include oratorios (only libretti survive), pieces for harpsichord
and organ (published 1716); New World works include masses and
motets, which have been found in missions in Argentina, Bolivia, Peru.

attended Harvard University, went to Paris and studied

instrumental in the development of the "American Sound"
in classical music so often associated with the patriotic
compositions of Aaron Copland. His research into Southeastern
USA shape note tunes, folk hymns, white spirituals, led to
his arrangement of "My Shepherd will supply my need" (text
by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), hymn tune RESIGNATION from
"The Southern Harmony (1835)"). It was incorporated into his
film score for a Department of Agriculture Resettlement
Administration documentary about the Mississippi River Valley

Henry Thomas Smart (1813-1879) born in London England,
son of Henry Smart (music publisher, orchestra director,
violinist) and nephew of Sir George Thomas Smart (conductor,
St George Windsor organist). Studied first for the law, but
soon gave this up for music. His eyesight began to wane at
age 18, and was completely blind by age 52 (1865) at which
he dictated his compositions to his daughter. He was greatly
admired by his contemporaries. As organist he worked at Blackburn
Lancashire (1831-), St Giles Cripplegate London (1836-), St Philip
Regent Street (1838-), St Luke Old Street (1844-), St Pancras (1865-).
He Composed [organ pieces, hymns (see Hymnal # 219), part-songs,
cantatas, opera, church services], Supervised organ installations,
Performed many recitals, Edited music, and was Music critic for
a weekly journal.

than you, O Lord?) as set by Roland de Lassus (c1530-1594),
born in Mons Belgium, worked for several patrons from age
eight, giving rise to the legend that he was three times
abducted for his beautiful voice. In Italy he adopted the
name by which he is best known, Orlando di Lasso, and obtained
his fist post as choirmaster at St John Lateran Rome. The bulk
of his career was spent in Munich (1556/7-, 1560- head of chapel)
in service of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria.

The Sequence text "Lauda Sion" was written by Saint Thomas
Aquinas (1225-1274). It summons all to endless praise of the
Blessed Sacrament (lines 1-15); assigns the reason for the
commemoration of its institution (lines 16-30); gives in
detail the Catholic doctrine of the Sacrament (lines 31-62);
shows the fulfillment of ancient types (lines 63-70); prays the
Good Shepherd to feed and guard us here and make us sharers of
the Heavenly Table hereafter (lines 71-80). The chant melody is
heard in the Prelude by Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) for the
text (Ecce panis angelorum / Factus cibus viatorum / Vere panis
filiorum / Non mittendus canibus (Behold this bread of Angels /
which hath become food for us on our pilgrimage / it is truly the
bread of God's children / let it never be thrown to dogs)).
The Offertory sung by the choir presents a portion of the text
as set by Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707).

Franciscus Florentinus (Flor) Peeters (1903-1986), born in Tielen
Belgium (near Antwerp), graduated Lemmens Institute, organist at
St Rumoldus Cathedral (Mechelen), taught at Lemmens Institute and
Royal Conservatory (Antwerp). Composed for keyboard, voice (songs,
masses), orchestra, chamber instruments, using a familiar but rich
musical language and adopting classical forms. Aria (1945, opus 51)
has a lyrical melody supported by repeated chords; Festival Voluntary
(1957, opus 87) is a joyous piece featuring tonal ambiguity, syncopated
rhythms, chordal fanfares.

Felix-Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) born in Boulogne-sur-mer
France to a family of organists and organ builders; began studies
with his father; 1849- St Nicholas sub-organist, College Mariette
student (harmony, counterpoint, fugue, piano, violin, viola);
1853- St Joseph organist; 1857- St Nicholas choirmaster, Boulogne
Conservatory teacher; 1860- Brussels Conservatory student; taught
privately, gave concerts. Moved to Paris; 1871-1901 La Trinite
organist; 1879-97 Trocadero Palace concerts of organ music of all
historical periods and countries; 1879-1904 concert tours in Europe
and USA; 1894- Schola Cantorum co-founder and teacher (Gregorian chant,
counterpoint, organ); 1896- Paris Conservatory organ instructor;
1902- Notre Dame honorary organist. Composed 400+ pieces, over 50
are in "L'organiste Liturgique" (1884)(Opus 65), a ten-volume
collection for liturgical use based on Gregorian chant melodies.

Andrew Moore (1954-) was born in Hayes, Greater London, England. At the Royal Academy of Music in London he studied violin and organ and also took the advanced orchestral conducting course. He was ordained a priest in 1982 as a member of the Benedictine community at Downside Abbey having obtained a degree in theology at Cambridge University (Christ’s College). At Downside he taught music and religious studies and was a Housemaster and Bursar. As monastic and school choirmaster for many years he helped to maintain a high standard of liturgical music. From 1993-95 he was parish priest at the Downside Parish of Little Malvern, the church where Elgar lies buried. In 1996 he stepped aside from monastic life for a more active ministry in the Diocese of Portsmouth as a parish priest (St Francis Ascot, Sacred Heart Lambourn, Our Lady of Lourdes Hungerford). He has composed mass settings, responsorial psalms, motets, anthems and carols, a song cycle and many other songs, chamber and orchestral music.

Malcolm Archer (1952-) was Organist and Master of the Choristers at Wells Cathedral, and conductor of the Wells Oratorio Society and the City of Bristol Choir. In Sep 2004 he was Organist of St Paul's Cathedral in London, then in Aug 2007 he took up a new position as Director of Chapel Music and Organist at Winchester College where he is in charge of the Winchester College Chapel Choir. He also teaches, composes, and gives recitals.

Richard Knight (1965-) is a former Organ Scholar at St John's
College, Oxford, Director of Music at Dean Close School, Cheltenham
England, and composes and conducts.

Thank You to all who were able to attend the Messiah
Sing-Along-Play-Along Concert last weekend, featuring our
Saint David of Wales Festival Choir and Soloists accompanied
by a Chamber Orchestra, joined by many local amateur singers
and instrumentalists! The music-making was excellent as always,
and the snacks/desserts/beverages tables had many delicious
items from which to choose both before the concert and during
the intermission.

Whitney Eugene Thayer (1838-1889) born in Mendon MA,
studied with John Knowles Paine at Harvard (after 1862),
then two years in Germany; organist of several Boston
churches; faculty member of New England Conservatory
(opened 1867); published a comprehensive course of organ
study (5 volumes, 1874); opened a private organ studio in
Boston (1875); edited two periodicals for organists and
choir directors, directed various musical organizations,
composed many pieces for church and recital use; much in
demand as a recitalist in his younger years. Spent latter
part of his life in New York: teaching, composing, was organist
of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church (1881-86).

On Sun May 3 at 5 pm the Saint David of Wales Festival Choir
will present a concert of the oratorio Messiah (Part Two and Part
Three, The Easter Sections) by Handel. All are welcome to come and
listen. The choir will be joined by other singers in the area who
desire to "sing along", and all will be accompanied by a chamber
orchestra whose members desire to "play along".

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) composed his "Deutsche Messe (D 872)" in 1826, setting devotional poetry by Johann Philip Neumann (1774-1849), professor of Physics at the Vienna Polytechnical Institute; the collaboration resulted in an Austrian folk-style Mass practical for use by that student congregation. It consists of eight songs, titled to denote the points during the Mass at which they are to be sung. Richard Proulx adaptated the Mass-Songs to the texts of the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Amen, Agnus Dei; the heavy-stock pew-cards will be used throughout the Easter Season.

Charles Marie Widor (1844-1937), born in Lyon France, lived in Paris and worked as St Sulpice organist (1870-1934) and Conservatory professor (organ 1890-, composition 1896-); wrote operas and songs, orchestral and chamber music; famed for his ten organ symphonies which followed the orchestral symphony multi-movement plan and explored the many tonal possibilities of the St Sulpice organ (finished 1863 by Cavaille-Coll, mechanically advanced, largest of the time, 5 manuals, 102 stops). Organ Symphony IV in F (opus 13 no 4, 1887) is in six movements: the third is our Prelude and the sixth is our Postlude.

Palm-Passion Sunday starts joyfully (Christ's "triumphant" but misunderstood entry into Jerusalem recalled through a Blessing of palms and Antiphon and Gospel and Processional Hymn), but the liturgy soon becomes somber (Readings, St Mark's Passion at 11 am chanted by cantors and choir singing crowd sections by Lassus). We depart in silence after Mass concludes.

Spy Wednesday (a name better known in England and Ireland than in America) recalls Judas agreeing to betray Jesus for 30 silver pieces; our 7 pm Penance Service of communal prayers and private confessions is accompanied by organ works of the Lenten Season (English, French, German, Italian).

Maundy Thursday (from Latin "mandatum", mandate) recalls the Gospel command to wash each other's feet and the institution of the Eucharist; music includes "If ye love me" (Tallis).

Good Friday music includes St John's Passion chanted by cantors and choir singing crowd sections (Victoria), Crux fidelis (John IV of Portugal), Adoramus te, Christe (Lassus).

Holy Saturday is celebrated with 8:30 am Morning Prayer (cantor, organ); the 9 pm Easter Vigil music is led by choir and organ.

Easter Sunday at 8:30 am Mass (cantor and organ) at 11 am Mass (choir and strings and organ).

"Love one another". The virtue of Love or Charity is an act of the will whereby we choose the good of another. It is difficult to reconcile Charity with creating a distraction by chatter, versus maintaining silence to help a fellow parishioner to pray.

During the Penitential Season of Lent, various Church documents call for changes of our external and internal dispositions, in order to make more room for God. The "fasting" from solo organ works is one such rubric. It provides a more noticeable silence before and after Mass.

Please maintain the Silence inside the church both Before and After every Mass. All are reminded to continue to use the silence to prepare for the Sacred Mysteries, and to give proper thanks at the end, without creating a distraction for others by talking inside the church. The noise has become increasingly noticeable.

Today is "Laetare Sunday", so named from the opening
word of the Introit (Isaiah 66:10-11 and Psalm 121:1):
"Laetare Jerusalem (Rejoice Jerusalem)". The special signs
of joy (flowers, rose vestments, greater use of instruments)
permitted this day encourage us in our course through this
season of penance. We have reached the mid-point of our
Season of Lent, having completed three weeks, with three
